AANA is inviting members to review and provide feedback on the newly developed Artificial Intelligence in Nurse Anesthesia Practice Position Statement during the open comment period, September 28–October 8, 2026.
As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to expand across healthcare, this new position statement outlines AANA’s position on the responsible, ethical, and evidence-based use of AI in nurse anesthesia practice. It emphasizes that AI should enhance and support—not replace—the clinical judgment, critical thinking, vigilance, professional accountability, and expertise of CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists.
The position statement addresses key considerations for the use of AI in anesthesia and perioperative care, including patient safety and clinical judgment, human oversight and professional accountability, safety and validation, transparency, ethical and equitable use, privacy and security, and CRNA/nurse anesthesiologist education, leadership, and participation in AI governance.
