June 29, 2026 AANA made a responsible fiduciary decision to discontinue pursuit of federal trademark registrations, “American Association of Nurse Anesthesiologists” and “American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and Nurse Anesthesiologists” that were tied to potential future business entities. This does not change AANA’s name, our position on the profession, or the ability of CRNAs to accurately describe their role, subject to applicable state law. Our focus remains on supporting CRNAs, advancing nurse anesthesiology, and protecting patient access to high-quality anesthesia care. Why is AANA discontinuing the pursuit of these trademark applications? After careful consideration, AANA determined that continuing to pursue the applications is no longer the best use of AANA’s resources. The applications were tied to future AANA business entities, and AANA has decided to provide the relevant services through its existing entities, programs, and trademarks. Would the marks have protected individual members? No. The marks would have applied only to an AANA business entity operating under the protected names. They would not have applied to individual AANA members, state associations, or other organizations. Would the marks have protected terminology used by members in other contexts? No. The marks would not have created separate legal protection for terminology used by members, state associations, or others outside the specific AANA business entity context. Individual members should consult applicable state law regarding professional terminology. Does this change AANA’s position on the profession, member terminology, or the name of the organization? No. AANA remains committed to advancing the profession and supporting CRNAs and nurse anesthesiologists in accurately describing their education, training, credentials, and role in healthcare. Our focus remains on supporting CRNAs, advancing nurse anesthesiology, and protecting patient access to high-quality anesthesia care. The name of the organization will not change.
