2027 Resident Roundtable

March 29, 2027

Topic:  The Conversation We Avoid: Substance Use Disorder in Nurse Anesthesiology

Substance use disorder can affect anyone, including nurse anesthesia residents, yet stigma, fear of professional consequences, and uncertainty about seeking help can make it a difficult topic to discuss. Join fellow nurse anesthesia residents for an open, supportive conversation about recognizing warning signs, challenging misconceptions, supporting peers, and understanding the importance of early intervention and recovery. Learn about available resources, including the AANA Helpline (800-654-5167), a free, confidential, 24/7 resource connecting residents, CRNAs, and those concerned about them with trained addiction professionals for guidance and support related to alcohol or drug use.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify potential risk factors, warning signs, and misconceptions associated with substance use disorder among nurse anesthesia residents and healthcare professionals.
  2. Discuss strategies for reducing stigma, encouraging early intervention, and supporting peers who may be experiencing substance-related challenges.
  3. Describe available resources for substance use disorder support, including the AANA Helpline, and how residents can access confidential assistance for themselves or others.
