Kansas Practice Law & Requirements

Are advanced degrees currently required?

(b) Licensure in the roles of clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, nursemidwife, and nurse practitioner. To be issued a license as an advanced practice registered nurse in any of the roles of advanced practice . . . each applicant shall meet at least one of the following requirements:

(1) Complete a formal, post-basic nursing education program located or offered in Kansas that has been approved by the board and prepares the nurse to function in the advanced role for which application is made;

(2) complete a formal, post-basic nursing education program that is not located or offered in Kansas but is determined by the board to meet the standards for program approval established by [board of nursing regulations];

(3) have completed a formal, post-basic nursing education program that may be no longer in existence but is determined by the board to meet standards at least as stringent as those required for program approval by the board at the time of graduation;

(4) hold a current license to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse in the role for which application is made and demonstrate to the board’s satisfaction that both of the following requirements are met: (A) The license was issued by another board of nursing; and (B) The licensee completed a program meeting standards equal to or greater than those established by [board of nursing regulations] or (ii) the applicant has met the requirements for licensure pursuant to K.S.A, 48-3406, and amendments thereto; or;

(5) complete a formal educational program of post-basic study and clinical experience that can be demonstrated by the applicant to have sufficiently
prepared the applicant for practice in the role of advanced practice for which application is made….

(d) Licensure in the role of nurse anesthetist. Each applicant for a license as an advanced practice registered nurse in the role of anesthesia shall meet one of the following requirements:

(1) Have met one of the requirements of subsection (b) of this regulation before July 1, 2002; or

(2) if none of the requirements in subsection (b) were met before July 1, 2002, meet one of the requirements of subsection (b) and hold a master’s degree or a higher degree in nurse anesthesia or a related field.” [Kansas State Board of Nursing, Administrative Regulations, sec. 60-11-103 (a) and (c)]

Is there an explicit new graduate provision?

The board may grant a temporary authorization to practice nurse anesthesia as a registered nurse anesthetist . . . for a period of not more than one year to graduates of a school of nurse anesthesia approved by the board pending results of the initial examination….” [Kansas Stat. Ann. sec. 65-1153(a)]

  • Who is required to complete these requirements?
    CRNAs renewing their DEA license or applying for an initial DEA license.
  • Can AANA help me fulfill these requirements?
    Yes, AANA has developed a collection of CE offerings to satisfy these requirements which includes 8 Class A CE (designated as 8 pharmacology credits). This bundle will be available to stream starting June 7 but can be preordered through CKN.
  • When do I need to complete these requirements?
    Starting on June 27, 2023, all CRNAs who are applying for a new DEA license or are renewing their DEA license.
  • The AANA is not listed as an approved provider. Will CE offered by the AANA meet this requirement?
    Yes, through our accreditation with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), AANA meets the requirements to offer these CE credits.
  • How do I report the completion of this requirement?
    CRNAs will self-report completion during their DEA licensing process. CRNAs who complete DEA Bundle through the AANA will receive individual certificates documenting the completion of the training. This should be retained as proof of training.

CRNAs are a type of “advanced practice registered nurse.”

“Upon application to the board by any licensed professional nurse in this state and upon satisfaction of the standards and requirements established under this act…the board shall grant an authorization to the applicant to perform the duties of a registered nurse anesthetist and be licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse.” [Kansas Stat. Ann., sec. 65-1154]
