Ohio Practice Law & Requirements

Are advanced degrees currently required?

An applicant to practice as a certified registered nurse anesthetist must, “[e]xcept as provided in divisions (B), (C), and (D) of this section . . . [s]ubmit
documentation satisfactory to the board that the applicant has earned a graduate degree with a major in a nursing specialty or in a related field that
qualifies the applicant to sit for the certification examination of a national certifying organization . . . .” [Ohio Rev. Code, sec. 4723.41, div. (A)(2)]

“On or before December 31, 2000, the board shall issue to an applicant a certificate of authority to practice nursing as a certified registered nurse
anesthetist . . . if the applicant complies with all requirements of this section, other than the requirement that the applicant has earned a graduate degree with a major in a nursing specialty or in a related field that qualifies the applicant to sit for the certification examination of a national certifying organization . . . .” [Ohio Rev. Code, sec. 4723.41, div. (B)]

Out-of-State Applicants: “A certified registered nurse anesthetist . . . who is practicing as such in another jurisdiction may apply for a certificate of authority to practice nursing as a certified registered nurse anesthetist . . . in this state if the nurse meets the requirements for a certificate of authority set forth in this section . . . . The application shall include evidence that the applicant . . . holds a license or certificate to practice nursing as a certified registered nurse anesthetist . . . in good standing in another jurisdiction . . . . If the applicant is a certified registered nurse anesthetist . . . who, on or before December 31, 2000, met the requirements of this section to practice as such and has maintained certification in the applicant’s nursing specialty with a national certifying organization. . . [then] division (B) of this section [see above] shall apply.” [Ohio Rev. Code, sec. 4723.41, div. (E)]

Is there an explicit new graduate provision?

No reference.
There is no provision explicitly addressing new graduate practice. As of September 1997, an applicant to practice as a certified registered nurse anesthetist must submit documentation to the board of nursing indicating that the applicant has passed the certification examination of “the
National Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists (sic) of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the National Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (sic) of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, or another national certifying organization approved by the board….” [Ohio Revised Code sec. 4723.41(A)(3)(b)] Per the Ohio Association of Nurse Anesthetists, new graduates may not practice in Ohio prior to passing the certification exam as of September 1997.

    CRNAs renewing their DEA license or applying for an initial DEA license.
  • Can AANA help me fulfill these requirements?
    Yes, AANA has developed a collection of CE offerings to satisfy these requirements which includes 8 Class A CE (designated as 8 pharmacology credits). This bundle will be available to stream starting June 7 but can be preordered through CKN.
  • When do I need to complete these requirements?
    Starting on June 27, 2023, all CRNAs who are applying for a new DEA license or are renewing their DEA license.
  • The AANA is not listed as an approved provider. Will CE offered by the AANA meet this requirement?
    Yes, through our accreditation with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), AANA meets the requirements to offer these CE credits.
  • How do I report the completion of this requirement?
    CRNAs will self-report completion during their DEA licensing process. CRNAs who complete DEA Bundle through the AANA will receive individual certificates documenting the completion of the training. This should be retained as proof of training.

State Licensure

CRNAs are a type of “advanced practice registered nurse.”
“If the applicant for a license to practice nursing as an advanced practice registered nurse has met all the requirements of section 4723.41 of the Revised Code and has paid the fee required by section 4723.08 of the Revised Code, the board of nursing shall issue the license and designate the license holder as a certified registered nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, certified nurse-midwife, or certified nurse practitioner. The license and designation authorize the holder to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse in the specialty indicated by the designation.” [Ohio Revised Code, sec. 4723.42(A)]
