Certified registered nurse anesthetists must ‘[p]rovide evidence of having successfully completed an advanced nursing education program . . . .” [20 CSR 2200-4.100, subsec. (3)(B)(2)
“Advanced nursing education program” is defined as:
1. Prior to July 1, 1998, completion of a formal postbasic educational program . . . leading to a graduate degree or certificate with a concentration in an advanced practice nursing clinical specialty area.
2. From and after July 1, 1998, completion of a graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a concentration in an advanced
practice nursing clinical specialty area, which includes advanced nursing theory and clinical nursing practice.” [20 CSR 2200-4.100, subsec. (1)(B)]
Out-of-State Applicants: “. . . [R]egistered professional nurses seeking licensure by endorsement and recognition as advanced practice nurses in Missouri may receive such recognition . . . if:
1. Prior to July 1, 1998, they had completed a formal postbasic education program from or formally affiliated with an accredited college, university, or hospital, of at least one (1) academic year, which included advanced nursing theory and clinical nursing practice, leading to a graduate degree or a certificate with a concentration in an advanced practice nursing clinical specialty area, and
2. Prior to July 1, 1998, they were certified by a nationally recognized certifying body . . . and have continuously maintained active, up-to-date recertification status.” [20 CSR 2200-4.100, subsec. (7)(C)]

A person who has graduated from an advanced nursing education program may be recognized by the Missouri State Board of Nursing as a Graduate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse for up to four (4) months from the date of graduation, pending a certification decision by an acceptable nationally recognized certifying body.” [20 CSR 2200-4.100 (3)(B)] Graduate APRNs must “[c]ease advanced practice nursing immediately upon notice that they have not successfully completed the certification process for any reason; and … [n]otify the board within five (5) working days of the
receipt of the results of their certification application.” [20 CSR 2200-4.100 (5)]

Yes, AANA has developed a collection of CE offerings to satisfy these requirements which includes 8 Class A CE (designated as 8 pharmacology credits). This bundle will be available to stream starting June 7 but can be preordered through CKN. - When do I need to complete these requirements?
Starting on June 27, 2023, all CRNAs who are applying for a new DEA license or are renewing their DEA license. - The AANA is not listed as an approved provider. Will CE offered by the AANA meet this requirement?
Yes, through our accreditation with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), AANA meets the requirements to offer these CE credits. - How do I report the completion of this requirement?
CRNAs will self-report completion during their DEA licensing process. CRNAs who complete DEA Bundle through the AANA will receive individual certificates documenting the completion of the training. This should be retained as proof of training.

CRNAs are a type of “advanced practice registered nurse.”
Advanced practice registered nurse,’ a nurse who has education beyond the basic nursing education and is certified by a nationally recognized professional organization as a certified nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife, certified registered nurse anesthetist, or a certified clinical nurse specialist. The board shall promulgate rules specifying which nationally recognized professional organization certifications are to be recognized for the purposes of this section. Advanced practice nurses and only such individuals may use the title ‘Advanced Practice Registered Nurse’ and the
abbreviation ‘APRN’….” MO Rev. Stat. 335.016(2)
Nurse anesthetists who meet certain educational requirements set forth by the Missouri SBON R&R will be recognized by the board
and will be eligible to practice as advanced practice nurses. [Rules of Department of Economic Development, sec. 20 CSR 2200- 4.100(2)(A)]
