It’s Patient Safety Awareness Week #PSAW19—March 10-16, 2019

PSAW is intended to encourage others to learn more about patient safety. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) provides a rich resource to raise awareness. For example, the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality estimates 1 in 31 hospitalized patients incurs a hospital acquired infection. The most common errors in both inpatient and outpatient settings are medication errors, contributing to as many as 400,000 deaths per year in the United States. Do your part to promote patient safety during PSAW 2019!

Situational Awareness: “Medicare for All Act of 2019”

We continue to keep a close eye on H.R. 1384 and S. 1804, “The Medicare for All Act of 2019,” and the impact such legislation could have on CRNAs across the country. While it is not expected to pass the Senate, view the bill on the House side. It is imperative we pay close attention to the debates as they continue and ensure there are no untoward impacts on CRNAs.

Physicians for Patient Protection

It’s not just our profession that regularly takes it on the chin from organized medicine; the nurse practitioners and other APRNs deal with similar nonsense on a regular basis as well. Check out this video from the Physicians for Patient Protection which attacks NPs. While it may be poorly done, and it’s questionable about how impactful this might be on those “highly educated” physicians, it’s still a weapon being used by organized medicine to frighten the public. They should be ashamed of themselves. But, as we’ve seen over and again, they aren’t.
