Issues, Updates, and Happy Holidays
As 2018 comes to a close, your AANA Board of Directors is actively representing the AANA membership on a number of issues affecting our profession. Following is a brief update on two of them.
- Novitas: As you know, this Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) is again seeking to keep CRNAs from being reimbursed for providing chronic pain management services by implementing a local coverage determination (LCD) it had previously agreed to table for one year while negotiating a more amicable solution with the AANA. The LCD would effectively reduce access to care for patients in Novitas regions. Upon learning in November that the LCD was scheduled for implementation on Jan. 3, 2019, your AANA leadership jumped into action. Our advocacy team immediately launched a coordinated effort to address the situation, requesting that Novitas support our understanding of delayed implementation and engaging our contacts on the hill, at the Department of Health and Human Services, and at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to gain their support on this issue. We are continuing to work diligently on your behalf, and I will keep you updated on developments as they occur.
- HHS report on Reforming America’s Healthcare System
We are currently in the process of reaching out to our numerous media contacts to gain coverage of our position on this positive report for non-MD/DO healthcare professionals and the patients they serve. Recently, Becker’s Hospital Review published my “3 things to know about the HHS report” article. These are exciting times filled with opportunities and challenges. More news and information will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead, so please keep following us on social media and AANA.com to keep up with the latest.
