In Memoriam: Ruth H. Rumley, CRNA (1927-2018)

  • Jul 5, 2018

Ruth H. (Yusaitis) Rumley, of Wethersfield, died on Friday, June 29, 2018, at the age of 91. She was born in Naugatuck, daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Norris) Yusaitis, and had lived in Wethersfield for 50 years. She was predeceased by her husband, John Rumley.

She graduated from nursing school in 1947 and, in 1950, became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. After graduation, she defied gender stereotypes by traveling solo through Europe during the early 1950s and then pursued a career in nursing for more than 65 years.

Ruth retired from The Institute of Living, Hartford, Connecticut, at the age of 88 after working there for more than 50 years. In 2005 Ruth was honored by the Center for American Nurses for her role in nursing. The tribute was titled, "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants."

Ruth volunteered with Medical Ministry International and assisted underprivileged children during volunteer medical trips to Honduras. She was an avid alpine skier and enjoyed taking long walks with her dog, Bridget. Ruth attended daily mass at either Sacred Heart, St. Luke's or Corpus Christi parishes. Her abiding faith and charity was an inspiration: she served as a volunteer in hospice, and she generously donated to charities around the world.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Knight and her husband Dr. Michael Knight of North Hampton, N.H., and their children, Rachel, Adam, Hannah, Emily and her spouse Samantha; and her son, Mark Rumley and his wife Jodi of Hebron, Connecticut, and their children, Rebecca, Hannah, Luke, Sarah and Matiwos.

Family and friends are welcome to attend calling hours on Thursday, July 5th, at Holy Trinity Church, 53 Capitol Avenue, Hartford from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private at St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington CT, 06111. Please visit to share a memory with the family.
