Park Ridge, Illinois – Bonnie Molloy, CRNA, PhD, was presented with the 2015 John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award during the Annual Congress of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, August 29-September 1 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the practice of anesthesia through clinical research. John F. Garde, CRNA, MS, FAAN, was a leader and visionary in nurse anesthesia in particular and healthcare in general. Among his many accomplishments and achievements, he was a staunch supporter of research and the AANA Foundation.

Dr. Molloy is the chief CRNA, quality risk manager and research director of Bridgeport Anesthesia Associates and Bridgeport Hospital. She is a clinical faculty instructor for Fairfield University and Bridgeport Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program.

Molloy’s research on intraocular pressure during robotic laparoscopic surgery for postoperative vision loss has had a strong impact on safety in anesthesia. Her contributions include recommended protocol for positioning, measuring, and recording intraocular pressures during surgery with steep Trendelenburg position, which involves placing the patient’s head down and elevating the feet. Other contributions include the use of Cosopt intervention, eye drops that reduce the amount of fluid in the eye, in turn decreasing pressure inside the eye.

“Bonnie’s studies have been published in many leading journals,” said AANA Foundation Board of Trustees Chair Wilma Gillis, CRNA, BSN, APNP, in presenting the award. “She has traveled to both national and international venues to present her research. She has involved her students, CRNA colleagues and physician colleagues in her research projects, and has furthered their experiences and understanding of research.”

The AANA Foundation congratulates Dr. Molloy on being named the 2015 recipient of the prestigious John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award.
