Advocate of the Year Award
The Advocate of the Year Award, established in 2006 by the AANA Foundation, is presented to an AANA Foundation Advocate for outstanding commitment to the nurse anesthesia profession through both individually supporting the AANA Foundation and also encouraging others to do the same.
The Advocate of the Year Award is presented to an AANA Foundation Advocate for outstanding commitment to the nurse anesthesia program through individually supporting the AANA Foundation and encouraging others to do the same. The 2019 Advocate of the Year recipient is Yana Krmic, MSN, CRNA, APRN. Krmic began her professional nursing career in 1996 in the small town above the Arctic circle in the Russian Federation before immigrating to the United States in 1997. Krmic completed her BSN degree at University of Phoenix, Tempe, Arizona, and continued her professional nursing career as a CCRN in the Cardiac ICU at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center before attending the Nurse Anesthesia Program at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Rutgers as of 2013). She began her nurse anesthesia career at North Shore LIJ Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY. Today, Krmic is the owner of her own company, practicing across the states of New York and Connecticut as an independent contractor. She has been actively involved with the AANA Foundation serving as the State Advocate for New York since 2016. She has also been involved with the New York State Association of Nurse Anesthetists (NYSANA), serving on the Government Relations Committee; as the current chair of the Public Relations Committee and in her third year as a director on NYSANA’s Board of Directors. On the national level, Krmic has been a member of the AANA Communications and Professional Development Committees. In October 2017, Krmic began a year-long Facebook birthday fundraiser that raised over $28,000 on behalf of the AANA Foundation. Week in and week out for a year, she reminded Facebook followers to donate to the fund and achieved an amazing goal. Krmic is a CRNA who is passionate, determined and committed to serving the AANA and the Foundation to advance the nurse anesthesia profession.
