The Advocate of the Year Award is presented to an AANA Foundation Advocate for outstanding commitment to the nurse anesthesia program through individually supporting the AANA Foundation and encouraging others to do the same. The 2018 Advocate of the Year recipient is Desiree Mauppins, BSN, MSN, CRNA, APRN from Missouri. Mauppins graduated in 2001 from the University of Central Arkansas with her Bachelors degree in nursing. After working as a Registered Nurse until 2014, she entered graduate school at Missouri State University where she went on to receive her Masters Degree in Nurse Anesthesia in 2016. Desiree's commitment is apparent by her abundant involvement and contributions to nurse anesthesia. Desiree was an active member of the inaugural group of the AANA Foundation Students Advocates in FY18. Mauppins currently serves as on the Missouri Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MoANA) Board as the Region II Director. The creative ideas that Desiree brings to the table have allowed for additional funds to be raised for the AANA Foundation to benefit nurse anesthesia education and research. Desiree is also a member of the RISE Above Steering Committee that has raised pledges over $1.3 million dollars to support health services research. As a State Advocate, she has engaged students at all four of the nurse anesthesia programs in Missouri while securing a Student Advocate at each program. Desiree's commitment is apparent by her abundant involvement in the Student Advocate program for the AANA Foundation and passion to engage those around her to share in these programs.
