Chief Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

A qualified CRNA responsible for the management of nurse anesthesia services in collaboration with departments of anesthesia, surgery, and nursing administration.  Develops and interprets organizational policies for budgets and personnel; assumes responsibility for safe and proper operation and quality control of equipment, techniques, and procedures; and analyzes and evaluates activities to assure established quality patient care.

May provide clinical services as a nurse anesthetist and administer various types of anesthesia, provide therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and share on-call responsibilities with anesthesia staff.

Essential Duties

  1. Develops capital and operational budget for approval by department director.  Documents need for changes in staffing/budget and makes recommendations.
  2. Coordinates purchasing of supplies and equipment and maximizes efficient utilization.
  3. Contributes to planning goals and objectives for the department and assists chair in coordination of activities and programs.
  4. Interviews, selects, and hires qualified personnel.  Counsels and evaluates personnel and terminates when necessary.  Implements personnel policies.
  5. Responsible for work schedules and assignments, on-call arrangements, and emergency changes in cooperation with staff.
  6. Develops productivity goals and measurements.
  7. Develops and maintains quality improvement programs for anesthesia in cooperation with hospital programs. 
  8. Maintains compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
  9. Plans in-service educational activities.
  10. Represents nurse anesthesia at hospital conferences and committee functions.
  11. Follows hospital policy on security of controlled substances.
  12. Performs all aspects of clinical anesthesia administration as scheduled.


  1. Holds current state licensure as a registered nurse in the state of _______, and complies with any applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements concerning advanced practice registered nursing.
  2. Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
  3. Complies with requirements regarding certification and recertification.
  4. Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by this institution or state.
  5. Demonstrates current competency in the management/clinical responsibilities for which the candidate is applying.

Clinical Responsibilities
Clinical anesthesia responsibilities and other activities are directed by work schedule needs. The clinical responsibility portion of this position description should be reviewed at least every two years and changes made as required.  More clinical responsibilities may be added as additional education and experience is obtained by the individual practitioner.

  3. Seeks ongoing professional management educational growth.
  4. Maintains current licensure requirements for CRNA practice.
