Disruptive Behavior and Workplace Incivility

AANA Resources

"The spiral of incivility and disruptive behavior can escalate to violence. Workplaces that ignore or unconsciously perpetuate incivility contribute to both immediate and long-term consequences for individuals and the organizations" according to Sandy Tunajek, CRNA, DNP.  Dr. Tunajek authored two Wellness Milestones articles on the escalating concerns about vertical violence and options to reduce the hostile healthcare environments that this culture creates:
  • Workplace Incivility - Part I: Anger, Harassment, and Horizontal Violence
  • Workplace Incivility - Part II: Managing the Dilemma

See ISMP report (link below) on a 2013 national survey of intimidation in the workplace and found a decline in organizational support in dealing with disrespectful behavior. Part II of the report (not yet published)
will include specific recommendations for addressing these destructive workplace behaviors.
