​ Virginia S. Thatcher, former editor at the Cleveland Clinic, became AANA full-time managing editor and public relations director in November 1946. A written history of nurse anesthesia was approved at the 1947 Annual Meeting, and the resulting work was Thatcher’s History of Anesthesia with Emphasis on the Nurse Specialist. The book was published in 1953 and has long since been out-of-print. The Archives-Library learned that the book's copyright had not been renewed. Since it was now in the public domain, the Archives-Library arranged for Thatcher's important work to be digitized and made available to AANA members, nurse anesthesia students, and the general public.
