Excela Health School of Anesthesia

Westmoreland Mall Event and Frazier Elementary Presentation

National Nurse Anesthetists Week 2013

Excela Health School of Anesthesia chose a unique way to celebrate National Nurse Anesthetists Week, January 20-26, 2013. During and in recognition of this week, with the cooperation of Westmoreland Mall, Greensburg, Pa., the students and faculty of Excela Health School of Anesthesia provided a weeklong event called “Family First Aid - An Ounce of Prevention” to the mall patrons and employees. Several topics were presented, including CVA/MI (cerebral vascular accident/myocardial infarction), falls/fractures, diabetes, choking, and cuts/lacerations. This was an excellent opportunity to educate the public about important health topics and to discuss the role of CRNAs in healthcare. Informational pamphlets provided by the AANA were distributed that discussed the role of the CRNA and several aspects of anesthesia.

Career Day Presentation to the Frazier Elementary School District
In addition to the mall event, a Career Day program also was presented to Frazier Elementary School District, Perryopolis, Pa., on January 30, 2013. This event included the presentation of the YouTube “Excela Health Children’s Video” to fourth and fifth graders. This video provided the scenario of a child having a surgical procedure done at Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, Pa. An hour-long presentation showcased the role of the CRNA in healthcare and included a question and answer session to allow children to discuss their own operating room experiences.

Both events focused on educating the public about Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and important healthcare topics. Every effort was made to make the public aware of the CRNA's role as a healthcare provider and to answer any questions regarding anesthesia. The audience participation in both events was incredible.
