The CRNAs of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill would like to acknowledge the peaceful passing of Pat Van Culin, CRNA, MS, on Friday, September 20, 2013.

Pat was born on February 18, 1950 in California. After high school, she graduated with a BA in psychology from The University of California, 1973. She then attended Cypress College for nursing, graduating in 1979. Pat’s passion for nursing naturally led her to California State University Kaiser Permanente School of Anesthesia for Nurses where she obtained her Masters of Science in 1982.

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist since 1983, Pat was well respected as an educator, and clinician. Her career path eventually led her back to California State University Kaiser Permanente School as an Adjunct Professor from 1993 up to her relocation to North Carolina in 1996. Pat was a member of AANA, NCANA, and Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society.

Pat was truly an icon at UNC HealthCare and was known for her commitment to her patients, her community, and to The Chapel of the Cross church. She enjoyed bird watching, knitting, and caring for her patients and her grandson.

For those who knew Pat, she will always be remembered for her devotion to her profession. In honor and recognition of Pat’s professional life, an educational memorial fund has been established and contributions can be sent to:
