Whenever a sustained hypertension occurs in a young, otherwise healthy individual, pheochromocytoma should be suspected. This article reviews the normal adrenergic neuron as well as the etiology, pathophysiology and anesthetic principles that are of concern in the patient with pheochromocytoma.
