Efficiency of the Thermal Jacket™ on the delivered temperature of prewarmed crystalloid intravenous fluid
By Capt Danny R. Bowen, CRNA, MSNA, USAF, NC
Warming of intravenous fluids can decrease the incidence of hypothermia in surgical patients. In this original research, the author compared the delivered temperature of fluids using a conventional blood warmer and the Thermal Jacket™, an insulation device designed for intravenous fluid bags.
Print version: 1992;60(4):369-373.

The relationship between preintubation lidocaine and postanesthesia sore throat
By Paula Bunker Fuller, CRNA, MSN
In this original research, the author looked at the relationship between intravenous lidocaine given during induction of general endotracheal anesthesia and postanesthesia sore throat. The study also examined selected variables in relation to the occurrence of postoperative sore throat.
Print version: 1992;60(4):374-378.

A descriptive study of blood in the mouth following routine oral endotracheal intubation
By Jo Anne Chrisco, CRNA, MS
George DeVane, CRNA, MHS
Visible blood cannot be relied upon to prompt the use of gloves and other protective equipment when infectious diseases can potentially be transmitted through inadvertent contact with patient secretions. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of mucosal breaches that resulted in occult or overt blood in the oral and pharyngeal areas which occurred following oral endotracheal intubation and extubation.

Keywords: Airway management, blood in mouth, universal precautions.
AANA Journal Course: Update for nurse anesthetists–Current concepts in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
By John Aker, CRNA, MS
In this third chapter of the AANA Journal Update Course, the author discusses the etiology of cardiac arrest during anesthesia, the mechanisms of blood flow during resuscitation, and the pharmacological importance of epinephrine for the preservation of myocardial and neurologic function.
Print version: 1992;60(4):384-392.

Infection and the epidural space: A case report
By Christopher C. Ferguson, CRNA, BSN
An epidural infection has the potential for causing profound neurologic damage. In this case report, the author describes an epidural infection following the use of a continuous lumbar epidural anesthetic. Factors relating to epidural infections, as well as pathophysiology, symptomology, diagnosis and treatment, are also presented.
Print version: 1992;60(4):393-396.
