Pain measurement tools for clinical practice and research
By Stephen A. Flaherty, CRNA, MS
An important component of effective postoperative pain management is a measure of the patient's pain intensity. This article examines three unidimensional pain measurement instruments that measure only one dimension of pain. One multidimensional pain measurement instrument, capable of measuring several facets of the pain experience, is also examined.

Nondisposable sphygmomanometer cuffs harbor frequent bacterial colonization and significant contamination by organic and inorganic matter
By Victoria Base-Smith, CRNA, MSN, CCRN
This original research research revealed that frequent bacterial colonization and significant contamination by organic or inorganic substances does occur on clean nondisposable blood pressure cuffs used in critical care settings. Although risk of disease transmission was not measured, the need for better sanitation and disinfection of the cuffs between patient use became evident.

By Christopher Smith, CRNA, MSN, USA, AN
MAJ Mary Ellen Wygant, CRNA, MSN, USA, AN
MAJ Richard McGrory, CRNA, MSN, USA, AN
MAJ Michael Silka, CRNA, MSN, USA, AN
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of one airflow filter (on the expiratory limb) versus two airflow filters (one on the inspiratory limb and one on the expiratory limb) in the prevention of bacterial migration in the anesthesia circle system, during general anesthesia, using semiquantitative analysis of the number of bacterial colony forming units.
