AANA and ASA Team with JCAHO on Sentinel Event Alert on Patient Awareness Under Anesthesia

For Immediate Release
October 7, 2004
The phenomenon of anesthesia awareness affects an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 patients each year. Patients undergoing cardiac, obstetric, and major trauma surgeries are at a proportionately higher risk for anesthesia awareness, according to a Sentinel Event Alert released October 6, 2004, by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO).
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists are working with the JCAHO to address the adequacy of current monitoring practices regarding anesthesia levels, including those that involve little or no technological support.
