The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) recently entered into a long term Services and Business Agreement. The agreement solidifies the relationship between the COA and the AANA, including the mutual recognition of the COA and AANA as the sole accrediting body for nurse anesthesia educational programs and sole professional organization for nurse anesthetists, respectfully. In reaching the agreement, the AANA and the COA acknowledge that it is in the best interests of both organizations, nurse anesthesia educational programs and nurse anesthetists, that the two organizations respect each other’s independence and autonomy, and commit to working to ensure high quality educational programs that prepare graduates for entry into practice and promote patient safety while advancing the nurse anesthesia profession. The COA and the AANA have shared interests in advancing the education, knowledge and skills of nurse anesthetists and, thereby, enhancing patient care and protecting public health. Both organizations are dedicated to working in an appropriately transparent and collaborative manner to promote excellence in the nurse anesthesia profession.
