Military Branch, Rank, and Unit Serving With:
U.S. Army, Captain, 1980th Forward Surgical Team

Reported for Active Duty: February 2002–August 2002

Of Interest: I was recently deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. My wife is Alice Kolodji, FNP, MSN. She works in health appraisal at Kaiser San Diego and is pregnant with our first child. I am part of the 1980th Forward Surgical Team. We were deployed as a 20 person team to Kandahar. While functioning as the only surgical capability in southern Afghanistan we cared for over 70 surgical patients with injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to the extremities, abd and thorax, multiple landmine injuries, amputations, massive facial/airway trauma, and pediatrics with open skull fractures. We were equipped with minimal lightweight, highly mobile equipment. While operating in tents in up to 130° F weather, we provided all of our care with CRNA-only anesthesia.
