​During the American Civil War, wounded soldiers were cared for by a new healthcare specialist: the nurse anesthetist. Among the nurse anesthetists who pioneered this profession, Catherine Lawrence was the first nurse known to administer anesthesia on the battlefield during and after the second Battle of Bull Run near Washington, D.C. Sister Mary Bernard is believed to be the first officially recognized nurse anesthetist.
