Privileges: Active members have the privilege of voting, of holding office, of serving on committees. Active members receive the AANA Journal.
 
Active, Inactive, and Honorary members receive the AANA NewsBulletin.

Active Membership

  • Active certified– Individuals who have been granted initial certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Active recertified– Individuals who are currently recertified by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Active non-recertified– Individuals who are required to be recertified but are not currently recertified and desire to enjoy the rights and privileges of Active membership.
  • Life – This is a closed category of membership comprised of individuals who have held this category of membership since August 31, 1976, and will do so for the remainder of their lifetime. Life members are exempt from payment of dues.
  • Emeritus – Individuals who have held Active membership for a minimum of 25 years, who desire to enjoy the privileges of Active membership, but have retired from the practice of anesthesia. One time payment of $300 is required.
Qualifications
Active membership shall be limited to those individuals who are able to provide evidence of the following:
  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing (as determined by the jurisdiction in which the applicant practices).
  • If practicing anesthesia, possession of a current license as a registered professional nurse as determined by the jurisdiction in which the individual practices or by the federal authorities if so employed.
  • Graduation from an accredited program in nurse anesthesia in compliance with standards set at the time of graduation by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
  • Successful completion of the certification examination administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor.
  • Compliance with the Guidelines and Standards established by the Association.
  • Is a citizen, resident of, or individual employed in the United States.
  • Compliance with other qualifications or requirements set forth in these bylaws.

Inactive Membership

 
An Inactive member is a former Active member who:
 
  • Is not engaged in the practice of anesthesia.
  • May attend meetings but may not vote or hold office in the Association.
  • May request transference to Active membership upon meeting the requirements for said membership and the payment of required dues.

Conditional Membership

 
The Board of Directors may, at its sole discretion, grant Conditional membership in any category of classification to a person who fails to meet one or more of the qualifications for such category or classification of membership. The terms and conditions thereof shall be prescribed by the Board.
 

Honorary Membership

Honorary membership may be conferred upon an individual by the Board of Directors and when conferred shall entitle that person to enter into discussion at any meeting of the membership without the right to make motions or vote and shall exempt such members from payment of dues.
 

Associate Membership

 
There are two categories of Associate membership:
 
Student: $200 (covers individual for entire length of anesthesia program)
 
Graduate: $100
 
Students enrolled in accredited programs of nurse anesthesia shall be eligible for student Associate membership. Such membership shall be automatic upon submitting a completed application and payment of dues, and shall not require action of the Board of Directors.
 
Graduate Associate membership shall be granted immediately to those individuals who have graduated from an approved program in nurse anesthesia and are eligible to take the certification examination. Renewal of Graduate Associate membership shall be available upon payment of dues during the next fiscal year dues cycle following graduation. Such application shall not require action of the Board of Directors. Graduates no longer eligible to take the certification examination shall not be eligible for AANA membership.
 
 
 

International Membership

 
An International member is a nurse anesthetist who has completed a program of basic nursing education and basic nurse anesthesia education and is qualified and authorized, in a country other than the United States and its territories, to practice nurse anesthesia. An International member must also be a member of a national association of nurse anesthetists; the national association must be a member of the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists (IFNA).
 
Privileges: International members (1) shall receive the AANA Journal and the AANA NewsBulletin, (2) shall be eligible to attend AANA meetings, (3) shall be eligible to attend the Annual Business Meeting without the right to make motions, (4) shall not be eligible to vote or hold office, and (5) at the sole discretion of the Board of Directors, shall be eligible to be appointed to serve on ad hoc committees.
