Council on Recertification
Here you will find information pertaining
to the process of recertification.

The Council is an autonomous body, with multidisciplinary and public representation, that is responsible for the recertification of CRNAs. The Council's purposes are to: (1) recertify qualified CRNAs on a biennial basis; (2) formulate, adopt and continuously evaluate the criteria for recertification of CRNAs; (3) formulate, adopt and continuously evaluate the criteria for approval of continuing education (CE) activities; (4) develop and maintain appellate mechanisms for CRNAs who have been denied recertification; and (5) develop and maintain a mechanism for the investigation and final resolution of charges or other allegations against CRNAs who are currently recertified.

Each member is elected by the Council on Recertification for a term of three years. Nurse anesthetist members are eligible for re-election for one (1) additional three (3) year term. Physician and Public members are eligible for re-election for two (2) additional three (3) year terms. To assure continuity in the decision-making body, terms of membership are staggered. Go to the COR member page to see the restructuring of this Council.

Each officer is elected by the Council for a one (1) year term with eligibility for re-election for two (2) additional one (1) year terms.

The Chairman of the AANA Continuing Education Committee serves as a Council member by virtue of his/her position and serves for a term or terms corresponding with such chairmanship.

Through its recertification process, the Council seeks to maintain a high level of knowledge, skill and professionalism among CRNAs and to foster high-quality anesthesia care for patients. The recertification process also seeks to ensure that appropriate limitations are placed on those CRNAs who develop conditions that might adversely affect their ability to administer anesthesia or provide safe care to patients.
