On Monday, Aug. 6, student registered nurse anesthetists gathered for one of the main Annual Meeting events planned for them: The Student Luncheon.
A packed audience of students and faculty members heard remarks from AANA President Debra Malina, CRNA, DNSc, MBA; National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists President Mary Anne Krogh, CRNA, PhD, MS; fiscal year 2012 Student Representative to the Education Committee Emma Batchelder, RN, BSN; and AANA Foundation Board of Trustees Chair Bette Wildgust, CRNA, MS, MSN.
President Malina told the audience that she attended her first AANA meeting as a student— in San Francisco—the same city where her term as AANA President is coming to a close. She told the audience that as students, they are 100 percent of the profession of nurse anesthesia’s future. With the privilege of being a nurse anesthetist comes responsibility to “preserve and protect your profession,” Malina said. She urged the students in the audience to maintain their membership in the AANA, and support CRNA-PAC and the Foundation. Most of all, she said, students need to get involved with the AANA and their state associations, and that they can be “the best PR campaign we could ever have.”
The names of the 2012 AANA Foundation Scholarship appeared in a slideshow during the luncheon and were listed in the luncheon program. As she thanked the sponsors and congratulated recipients Foundation Chair Bette Wildgust stressed the importance of supporting the Foundation’s work in research and education.
Education Committee Chair Kristen Starnes-Ott, CRNA, MS, announced that Nancy Tai, RN, is the winner of 2012 Student Writing Contest. Tai is a student at Albany Medical College Nurse Anesthesiology Program, Albany, N.Y.
In her closing remarks, Batchelder thanked the Education Committee, her classmates, and fellow students, and took the opportunity to recognize other AANA student representatives, including: Michael Wilhelm, RN, CEN, CCRN, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs; Elisha Catchings, RN, BSN, Practice Committee; Catherine Kinsey, RN, BSN, Public Relations Committee; Joseph Rodriguez, RN, BSN, CCRN, CRNA-PAC Committee; Patrick Harrell, RN, Health and Wellness Committee; and Monica Massemer, RN, BSN, AANA Foundation.
The luncheon came to a close with the introduction of the 2013 student representative: Emily Grost, RN, BSN, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Program Pittsburgh, Pa.
