Saturday Hearing to Highlight Major Revisions to Accreditation Standards

On Saturday, Aug. 4, the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) Standards Revision Task Force will hold a “Hearing on the Major Revision to the Entry Level Doctoral Standards for Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.” Task Force members Rebecca Madsen Gombkoto, CRNA, DNP, Chair; James Walker, CRNA, DNP; Denise Martin Sheridan, CRNA, PhD;  and Betty Horton, CRNA, PhD, FAAN, consultant, will conduct the hearing, which will be held directly after the Business Meeting (approximately 4 p.m.) in Moscone Center West, Room 3006-3012.

At the 2007 Annual Meeting, the AANA Board of Directors announced its support for doctoral education for entry into nurse anesthesia practice by 2025. In 2009, the COA adopted the requirement that students accepted into an accredited program on Jan. 1, 2022, and thereafter must graduate with doctoral degrees.

Members are urged to attend the hearing and learn about this major revision. “The draft Standards reflect a significant advancement in nurse anesthesia education. It is important for all members to understand what is contained in the new standards, and to provide feedback,” said Accreditation and Education Specialist Kara Chlebek, MPA.

"The hearing will offer “an overview of some of the key differences in the new doctoral standards, as well as the task forces’ research and rationale for the changes.”

At the hearing, attendees will have the opportunity to make a verbal comment on the draft Standards and will receive information on how to submit a written comment. A very limited number of hard copies of the draft Standards will be available at the hearing. The COA encourages members to bring their copy with them. To obtain a copy of the draft standards to print or download, visit the COA’s website at home.coa.us.com

Focus Session on Standards
On Sunday, Aug. 5, from 4-6 p.m., the COA will conduct a focus session for individuals interested in commenting on or discussing the draft Standards in smaller-group format. Several members of the Task Force as well as the COA will be present. The session will take place in the Headquarters Hotel, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Foothill G (2nd floor).
