In 1975, I went to a little village in the Honduras with some missionaries for 2 weeks. We flew in a little Cessna Cherokee and landed on a cow field. One surgeon and I did cases by the light from the OR window.

We started when the sun came up and stopped when it went down. I put halothane in an ether vaporizer (after taking out the wick) and turned the dial all the way up to 4. When I was in anesthesia school in the Air Force, one of our instructors told us that was the equivalent of 2% halothane. I guess it was right because it worked fine.

We mainly did tubals and vasectomies to help the general population, and a little trauma. It was the must fun I ever had in anesthesia. When we left, all the town came out to wave goodbye.
