The AANA Federal Government Affairs office opened in Washington, D.C.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Study of Nurse Anesthetist Manpower Needs was published.

The voice mail system was installed in at the executive office. (NB June 1990)

“Why you should become a Nurse Anesthesia Educator…” brochure, a joint venture between the Education Committee and the Council for Public Interest in Anesthesia, was published. (NB June 1990)

AANA members served in the Persian Gulf in Operation Desert Shield and later in Operation Desert Storm.

The patient monitoring and evaluation standard was revised to include end-tidal CO2 monitors. (NB Apr 1992)

“Anesthesia Options for Labor and Delivery: What Every Expectant Mother Should Know” was translated into Spanish and became the AANA’s first non-English brochure. (NB June 1992)

The AANA approved sponsorship of Nurse Anesthesia Overseas, a subdivision of Anesthesia Overseas within Health Volunteers Overseas. (NB Dec 1992)

Members voted to notify candidates of their election results within 10 days of close of voting; previously election results were announced at the Business Meeting. (NB Oct 1992)

1993

The new executive office building was dedicated during the Spring Assembly of States.

The first university-affiliated management workshop took place: AANA/Kellogg Graduate School of Management’s Management Development Program. (NB Nov 1992)

The books Clinical Techniques of Regional Anesthesia: Upper Extremity Blocks (NB Mar 1993 p2), Clinical Techniques of Regional Anesthesia: Spinal and Epidural Blocks (NB Sept 1993), and Professional Aspects of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (NB Sept 1993) were published.

The first workshop held in the Learning Center in June was also the first Epidural and Spinal Anesthesia Workshop. (NB Apr 1993)

The Latex Allergy Protocol was adopted. (NB June 1993)

The PR campaign CRNAs Caring for America was launched. (NB June 1993)

The AANA became a specialty nursing organizational affiliate of the American Nurses’ Association. (NB June 1993)

The International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists office was established in the AANA executive office in Park Ridge, Ill.

The Credit and Transcript Automated Communication System (C-TACS) was introduced to members at the Fall Assembly of States. (NB Dec 1995)

The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs received its first major external grant–“Nurse Anesthesia Educational Requirements and Mobility Between North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Countries”–funded by the U.S. Department of Education. (NB Jan 1995)

The “Ask Me About Anesthesia” national public relations campaign was launched; it included 30-second TV and radio spots, print ads, and the “CRNAs Answer Your Questions” brochure (NB June 1995). The campaign won two awards. (NB July 1996 and NB Sept 1996)

The AANA Archives were dedicated. (NB June 1995)

Guidelines for Expert Witnesses was adopted. (NB July 1995)

The Spring Assembly of States and the Government Relations Workshop were combined (NB Oct 1994); in 1997 the meeting was renamed the Mid-Year Assembly.

The new phone systems installed in the Park Ridge and D.C. offices utilized state-of-the-art ISDN and T-1 technologies. (NB May 1997)

The Foundation began to sponsor a mentoring program pairing CRNA doctoral students with CRNAs holding doctoral degrees. (NB May 1997)

The New Program Directors Orientation Workshop was held for the first time at the executive office; it was sponsored by the Council on Accreditation, Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists, and Education Committee. (NB June 1997)

The AANA was represented at the dedication of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington, Va. (NB Jan 1998); AANA was also an early donor to the project.

1998

“Rest Assured” print ads, developed in response to the proposed rule to defer supervision to the states, began running in major newspapers in February. (NB Mar 1998)

The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs required that all programs be at the graduate level—that is, awarding at least a master’s degree—by October 1. (NB Dec 1998)

The Clinical Anesthesia Practitioner Award was renamed the Alice Magaw Outstanding Clinical Practitioner Award effective with the 1999 award.

The AANA subsidiary Anesthesia Professional Liability Services changed its name to AANA Insurance Services.
